the morning dove

Original post: August 4, 2014

Darkness is slowly replaced by eastern light. For the first time in a long time I hear the coo of a morning dove. Tears crest my cheeks. This lonesome bird lost her habitat yesterday. Small men in big trucks came without warning, fired up their engines and swiped their way through her leafy world, where she tended a nest filled with eggs.  A neighbor pointed to a sawed off branch placed in the ornamental apple just outside my house, one of the few trees left on our street, where her nest sits in a Y. I listen to her this morning heavy with powerlessness, and wonder at the changing tides in my world.
